Academic Integrity (Collaborative Enhancement Project)

 

This project aimed to engage students inclusively in learning and developing academic integrity skills.

 

Disproportionally high numbers of academic misconduct investigations involve BAME, international, widening participation and students with a disability. Current teaching and learning to support academic integrity does not seem to be as effective for some student groups as for others, making it harder for them to follow good academic practice.

 

To address these issues of inclusion, this project developed three innovations to engage all contemporary students in good academic practice as part of an effective approach to academic integrity:

 

A development model for student academic integrity champions

The team co-created a step-by-step process to establish and maintain institutional student champions of academic integrity through recruiting, training and supporting them to promote academic integrity to their peers.

 

Inclusive and accessible academic integrity staff teaching resources

Activities and guidance for staff to deliver inclusive and accessible academic integrity education were created using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles.

 

Inclusive and accessible academic integrity student voice videos

With the recognition that making academic integrity inclusive and accessible to all students requires innovative and engaging materials, the team supported student participants to develop short, visually appealing, fully accessible videos which feature their voices, animation and memorable images to help students retain core academic integrity messages.

 

Project outputs

Student Academic Integrity CHAMPION model

This model is designed to assist staff in developing the institutional role of Student Academic Integrity Champions.

 

It involves 8 stages of development, using the acronym CHAMPION as follows:

  • Collect information
  • Hone the definition
  • Attract, recruit and select
  • Manage and prepare
  • Pilot the role
  • Involve in academic integrity
  • Observe and reflect
  • Nurture the role

Inclusive and accessible academic integrity teaching resources

This project brings together inclusion and academic integrity. We define inclusion as follows: Inclusion involves celebrating differences in all aspects of who we are as individuals with every person respected, valued and supported.  We aim to integrate it within our practice to enhance engagement, participation, learning and choice for all.


Activities and guidance for staff to deliver inclusive and accessible academic integrity education have been created using Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and are available below. The activities include an awareness-raising workshop and templates for inclusive and accessible teaching resources.
