Embedding disciplinarity in shared modules

The Quality Assurance Agency has published new resources on strategies to embed disciplinary identities in curriculum design.
The resources include a report from the QAA-funded Collaborative Enhancement Project led by a team from the University of Greenwich in partnership with colleagues from Royal Holloway, University of London, and the University of Lincoln.
The project explored how students’ various disciplinary affiliations and identities can be brought into the design of modules shared across the curricula of different programmes.
It identified specific contexts, barriers and enablers that impact upon the likelihood of the successful implementation of interdisciplinary approaches to the delivery of taught provision.
"Our research was crucially founded upon collaborations with students. The student voice was essential in this study - it informed our understanding of the rationale for shared modules and the issues of interdisciplinarity and inclusivity which underpin their design." Said Dr Sallyanne Decker, Associate Professor in Banking and Finance at University of Greenwich, and Collaborative Enhancement Project Lead. "We are grateful to all the staff, students and student researchers who took part in the study which has led to the development of resources we know will be valuable to the sector".
The study is accompanied by a toolkit whose elements have been developed to support the design, delivery and evaluation of such shared modules.
