Psychology is a scientific and reflective discipline that encompasses a range of empirical approaches and methods of enquiry that aim to understand the mind, brain, experience, behaviour and socio-cultural contexts of human and non-human animals. The knowledge gained from psychological research continues to make a substantial contribution to society to develop our understanding of human behaviour and the application of this knowledge to real-world issues.

Graduates in psychology have a range of skills including critical thinking, problem-solving, data analysis, ethical awareness, reflective skills, social and personal responsibility, communication and teamwork. They benefit from curricula that develop their interpersonal skills, such as empathy, active listening and effective communication, which are essential for building and maintaining relationships with clients, patients and colleagues. These skills are highly valued in many professions and can be applied to a wide range of career paths.

Psychology is an evolving discipline, and this new Statement is essential to meet the needs of students and provide them with a framework to develop their understanding of themselves, others and society through scientific investigation. It has been developed by an advisory group drawn from a diverse range of academics, students, professional associations and accrediting bodies across the four nations and is the culmination of over a year’s dedicated work. It sets a globally recognised standard in education and is future focused, enabling graduates to possess skills needed to meet the challenges ahead, whilst understanding and learning from the roots of psychology.
