The University of Fiji achieves global quality accreditation

Date: April 27 - 2023

The University of Fiji has achieved global quality accreditation from QAA after successfully completing its International Quality Review (IQR).

IQR is a rigorous process which benchmarks global higher education institutions against international quality assurance standards set out in Part 1 of the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG).

The review was performed between 7 and 10 February 2022 by three independent reviewers appointed by QAA who found that The University of Fiji had met all of the 10 ESG Standards and Guidelines.

As part of the review, QAA identified the following areas of good practice for the University:

  • Engagement with alumni and external industry stakeholders in the design of their awards and student experience.
  • Encouraging innovation in teaching methods and the use of new technologies in teaching.
  • Developing a proactive approach to providing a wide range of learning resource and student support, especially during the pandemic.

Shaista Shameem, Vice-Chancellor of The University of Fiji, said: ‘Once again we are really grateful for the review and are over the moon about having finally met the 10 ESGs after a long wait to meet all the criteria. It was definitely a learning process for the entire University Community.’

Chris Bland, QAA’s Head of Accreditation and Consultancy, said: 'We are delighted to announce that The University of Fiji has successfully completed the IQR process. The review was an excellent opportunity to work with colleagues at The University of Fiji and to encourage their commitment to quality higher education provision. I am excited to continue working with The University of Fiji and support them in future.’

The University of Fiji’s IQR accreditation will be valid for five years and subject to a satisfactory mid-cycle review. The University can now display QAA’s Accreditation Badge, showing that their quality assurance processes are comparable with international best practice. The institution is now eligible to become a QAA International Member.

By securing global accreditation from QAA, international institutions can clearly spotlight their quality standards internationally, and more easily start a dialogue with institutions outside their own country.
