QAA Cymru has published our annual report on engagement with the Welsh Language (Wales) Measure 2011 during academic year 2024-25.
The report showcases how QAA meets our commitments to the Welsh Language Standards (No. 2 regulations) 2016 in service delivery, operations, policy-making and record-keeping. It also demonstrates our wider commitment to the Welsh language and its role in higher education in Wales.
QAA’s commitment to the Welsh language includes delivering Welsh Language Standards Awareness training to all new starters, and recently-launched Courtesy Welsh Skills training for colleagues in regular contact with providers and stakeholders in Wales. QAA's cross-organisational Welsh Language Committee (formerly Welsh Language Working Group) provides oversight of our compliance with the Standards.
In 2024-25, we continued to develop our agreed responsibilities for meeting the Standards across the organisation and made significant progress on areas identified for development, including areas highlighted in our Welsh Language Audit in March 2023 and follow-up monitoring.
QAA continued to engage with the work of the Welsh Language Commissioner, taking part in a consultation on the Commissioner's Draft Strategic Plan for 2025-30, and an event on Policy Making Standards.
QAA Cymru played an active role in 2024-25 in supporting the Welsh language in higher education in Wales, hosting a session on the specific implications of Generative Artificial Intelligence for Welsh-medium studies at our Medr-funded Welsh Integrity and Assessment Network Symposium in June 2025, and through our Medr-funded project work. This included bilingual outputs from our Collaborative Enhancement Project on Immersive Learning, and our published case studies on Good Practice in Student Transitions to HE.
Debra Macfarlane, QAA's Director of Regulatory Services, said: "We’re immensely proud of the progress that we've made in delivering activities and services through the medium of Welsh, in support of the Welsh Language Commissioner's vision of a Wales where people can live their life in Welsh – and where all people’s lives can be enriched by the Welsh language. We are committed to ensuring that colleagues across the sector in Wales can engage with as many of our opportunities in their preferred language as possible, and we look forward to strengthening our relationships with key stakeholders in Wales to achieve this.
