Commissioned by Medr, Wales's Commission for Tertiary Education and Research, a new report from QAA Cymru charts approaches to transitions into and within higher education, exploring a broad range of examples good practice from across Wales, Scotland and England.
Our report highlights a set of key themes in approaches which can underpin successful processes of progression into and through higher education. It finds that a strong sense of belonging and community improves student retention and wellbeing; that early and integrated academic support builds confidence and capability; that clear, inclusive and impartial information enables informed decision-making and establishes realistic expectations; that structured and ongoing processes of induction support students in their HE journeys; and that peer mentoring from fellow students enhances social and academic integration.
It emphasises the importance of personalised support, inclusivity and collaboration, and stresses that "addressing barriers to participation and progression requires a holistic approach that integrates clear information, academic skills development and social and emotional support throughout the student journey".
