IPA Case Study: International accreditation for English programmes in Kuwait

QAA’s International Programme Accreditation (IPA) helped Gulf University for Science and Technology (GUST) in Kuwait to strengthen quality assurance processes, foster international partnerships, and unite faculty and leadership around a shared commitment to continuous improvement and student success.

Dr Asmaa Alduhaim, Head of the English Department at GUST, shares her reflections on the University’s experience with IPA.

Why did you choose to seek international accreditation?

We recognised the importance of benchmarking our programmes against global standards to improve internal quality assurance mechanisms and gain formal recognition for academic rigour. We were also driven by the goal of enhancing student mobility and strengthening international partnerships.

Why did you choose to work with QAA and undertake International Programme Accreditation?

QAA’s global reputation for integrity and thoroughness, combined with its transparent IPA process, made it the ideal accreditor. The decision to work with QAA was strategic and aligned with our vision of continuous quality improvement.

How has accreditation influenced internal quality assurance, academic programmes or administrative processes?

As a result of going through the accreditation process, our QA practices have become more systematic and evidence-based, documented and monitored by the accreditation committee at the department. Faculty members now also actively contribute to curriculum review cycles, and we have revised course learning outcomes to align with international benchmarks.

The most significant benefit of international accreditation for our institution has been the internal cultural shift towards continuous improvement. Accreditation has empowered faculty and staff to think proactively about quality and student outcomes.

This accreditation journey has been deeply transformational. It has not only strengthened our internal processes and elevated our international standing, but more profoundly, it brought our faculty, students and leadership together around a shared sense of purpose and pride. This experience has shaped us, bonded us, and reminded us why we do what we do. We are sincerely grateful to QAA for their trust and partnership, and we look ahead with hope and excitement for continued collaboration.

Has accreditation affected your institution’s reputation locally or globally?

QAA accreditation has been a milestone for the department and University and has affirmed the value of our programmes on a global stage. Since accreditation, we have established several collaborations with British universities, particularly the University of Leeds and the University of Liverpool.
