About this subject

""
Students of English study meaning through communication in the medium of English and related languages, and develop their understanding through creative, critical and analytical responses. The study of language, of literary and cultural works, and the production of critical and creative work, enable students to interpret and interrogate past and present cultures, to anticipate their future transformations, and to enhance their ability to understand themselves, other people and our shared world.

English graduates possess the ability to closely analyse and critique texts within their literary, historical and linguistic contexts. They understand verbal creativity, including aesthetic aspects, and can analyse written and spoken discourses, appreciating their emotional and rhetorical impact.  Graduates are expert in clear and effective communication, both verbally and in writing. Skilled in scholarly research and proper bibliographic techniques they demonstrate proficiency in handling complex texts and ideas while understanding their historical connections.

This new Subject Benchmark Statement was produced by a broad, diverse advisory group and represents our wide-ranging and dynamic disciplines of English Language, English Literature and Creative Writing.  With EDI, access, employability and sustainability at its core, it will be a valuable resource for students, staff, employers, teachers and advisors, encouraging and supporting pedagogical innovation and the development of new programmes. Most importantly, it will serve to foster the capabilities of communication, collaboration, creativity and critical thinking in our graduates, enabling them to develop as individuals, have rewarding careers and contribute effectively to society and the economy, as well as enhancing their ability to understand themselves, other people and our shared world.
