Fariza Nizamova, Chief Specialist in the Department of Quality Assurance and Accreditation at New Uzbekistan University, shares a practitioner’s view of building an internationally aligned quality culture - from strengthening internal systems to learning alongside global peers.

Aligning with international expectations

As a quality assurance specialist at New Uzbekistan University (NewUU), my role is important for effectively building a culture of continuous improvement and ensuring that our academic programmes meet and exceed international standards, as we aim to become a flagship university in Uzbekistan.

We now approach quality and inclusion in a more strategic and informed way.

New Uzbekistan University joined QAA as part of its strategic goal to become a leading international university. Our main objective was to strengthen our global reputation and build trust among students, faculty, and international partners.

QAA membership supports our priorities by helping us achieve academic excellence, compare our practices with international standards, and prepare for global accreditation. It reflects our commitment to internationally recognised quality frameworks.

Strengthening capability through shared learning

For me and my team, QAA membership has been highly impactful. It has increased our confidence in managing quality at an international level. We now approach quality and inclusion in a more strategic and informed way, always looking for new ways to improve student experience and academic outcomes.

Building credibility and global partnerships

QAA membership has significantly strengthened NewUU’s international profile and partnerships too. Being associated with a respected organisation like QAA clearly shows our commitment to high academic standards. This helps attract international students who seek quality education and recognised qualifications. It also supports collaboration with other international universities and research institutions. For faculty, it provides a clearer understanding of international standards and helps build a strong quality culture.

Embedding international standards in everyday practice

Our participation in the International Quality Assurance Programme (IQAP) in London in 2024 was also very useful, offering practical insights and opportunities to connect with international peers. These experiences have helped us improve our internal quality assurance system, including clearer policies for programme design, assessment, and student support. The UK Quality Code, together with ESG standards, has guided our governance and ensured alignment with international best practices.

Improving consistency across the university

As a result of our engagement with QAA, we have seen positive changes across the university. Faculty members now have a better understanding of quality assurance, leading to more consistent practices and a shared responsibility for maintaining standards. Our processes have become more structured and evidence-based, especially in curriculum development, learning outcomes, and student feedback.

Focusing on long‑term enhancement

Beyond specific activities, one of the most valuable aspects of QAA membership is access to a global community and a strong framework for continuous improvement. It has helped shift our mindset from simply meeting requirements to actively improving all areas of our work. We now focus more on long-term planning and continuous development.
