The Office for Students is calling for greater rigour and transparency in evaluation, including advance publication of evaluation plans and results. If the sector is to provide the best offer to students and meet regulatory requirements, the need for capacity-building in internal evaluation will expand.

Peer Evaluation will increase capacity and consistency by fostering a collaborative culture based on reciprocal feedback to improve evaluation practice and increase mutual learning. The process would operate over time, supporting both formative and summative evaluation, allowing practitioners to build confidence in applying robust and appropriate evaluation methods.

Outputs

This project aims to develop a pilot Peer Evaluation system that will help the sector to develop evaluation evidence on access, success and progression provision designed to improve student experience, in particular for those from under-represented groups.

Based on agreed methodology and criteria designed to capture and assess different aspects of colleagues’ evaluations, the following outputs will be developed to increase expertise across the sector:

  • A CPD course for peer evaluators to create a common approach to evaluating and using evidence
  • Guidelines for institutions regarding requirements for peer evaluations
  • A shared understanding of strengths and weaknesses of different approaches to evaluation and evidence resulting in improved practice, transparency and accountability
  • A report and dissemination events to support the HE community with embedding their own peer evaluation systems.
