Institutions across higher education often grapple with challenges of tackling issues of quality that are informed by the literature and exemplars of good practice. This is even more exacerbated in further education, which often has fewer resources and staff with the capacity, skills, or experience to take scholarly informed approaches to quality matters.

This project aims to change sector culture and address these challenges by creating self-sustaining environments which foster pedagogic research informed decision making on matters of quality.

Project outputs

The team developed a Pedagogic Research Model (PedR) – a ‘how to’ guide on developing, promoting and celebrating pedagogic research activities - to unpick the challenges around quality issues, and created this model approach which both higher education (HE) and further education (FE) can adapt to promote a culture of a scholarly informed approach to their own institutional decision-making processes.

The model describes five core factors that can contribute to the development of a positive culture around pedagogic research and general scholarly activity:

  1. Develop a pedagogic research environment
  2. Provide support for scholarly research
  3. Promote a positive culture
  4. Recognise the achievements of PedR
  5. Engage with key PedR stakeholders

In addition to the PedR, the project produced two case studies, which showcase examples of practice relating to scholarly activity that inform decision-making around the student experience.

Case study: The role of an academic development centre in Scholarship of teaching and Learning based institutional decision making.

Case study: A framework for identifying contract cheating for transnational education partners

The project team became a pilot community of practice through the project member collaborations and concluded the project with the Modelling pedagogic research in HE and FE Conference to share practice and showcase the benefits of research informed practice.

In the final PedR report, you can find information about future activities to consider, as well as a summary of the project's aims and objectives.

The lead project team, the University of Bath, will continue to act as a focal point for future work and decision-making around these project outcomes and will host a project legacy webpage.
