QAA accreditation case study: Institutional accreditation in United Arab Emirates

QAA’s international institutional accreditation helped the American University of Ras Al Khaimah to transform their institutional quality culture and develop an enhancement-orientated mindset across the University.

Professor Bassam Alameddine, President of the American University of Ras Al Khaimah (AURAK), discusses how the accreditation process established a framework that encouraged continuous improvement and strengthened strategic planning.

Why did you choose to seek international accreditation?

AURAK's decision to pursue QAA international accreditation reflected the University's long-standing commitment to academic excellence, international benchmarking, and continuous institutional enhancement. Rather than viewing international accreditation solely as external recognition, the University sought an internationally respected quality framework that would enable critical institutional reflection, validate existing strengths, identify opportunities for enhancement, and support the ongoing development of its academic and institutional practices.

Why did you choose to work with QAA and undertake institutional accreditation?

When considering international quality assurance agencies, QAA's internationally recognised reputation, together with its emphasis on enhancement-led review, academic quality, and student-centred education, distinguished it as the most appropriate partner. The University particularly valued QAA's approach of working collaboratively with institutions to support reflection, enhancement, and the sharing of good practice, rather than focusing solely on compliance against standards. The enhancement-led philosophy underpinning QAA international accreditation closely aligned with AURAK's commitment to embedding a culture of evidence-based decision-making, effective academic governance, and continuous improvement across both academic and administrative functions.

How has accreditation influenced internal quality assurance, academic programmes or administrative processes?

During the review process, the University advanced its quality assurance framework by refining policies and procedures, improving assessment moderation practices, reinforcing academic integrity arrangements, and establishing more structured approaches to evidence-based planning and institutional effectiveness. The review also promoted stronger collaboration across Schools and administrative departments, creating greater institutional ownership of quality enhancement.

Within academic quality assurance, the University has progressively refined programme assessment, course review, second marking and closing-the-loop processes to ensure greater consistency and transparency. These developments have reinforced confidence in academic standards while encouraging a stronger focus on student learning, authentic assessment, and evidence-based improvement.

At the institutional level, quality assurance has become more closely integrated with strategic planning, performance management and institutional effectiveness. Enhanced use of institutional data, performance indicators and stakeholder feedback has strengthened decision-making across the University and reinforced accountability for educational quality and institutional performance.

Perhaps the most significant outcome has been the evolution of quality assurance from a predominantly compliance-orientated function into an institution-wide culture that supports innovation, strategic decision-making, and continuous enhancement. Faculty engagement in quality assurance, assessment enhancement, accreditation activities and professional development has also expanded significantly, contributing to stronger institutional quality culture and greater shared ownership of continuous improvement processes.

QAA’s review process and feedback were highly constructive and supportive throughout the journey, and this support helped AURAK approach the review as an opportunity for institutional learning and long-term enhancement, rather than as a compliance exercise alone. Today, quality enhancement is no longer viewed as an activity associated with accreditation, but as an integral component of how the University plans, evaluates performance, and continuously improves the student experience and institutional effectiveness.

International accreditation was a highly valuable and transformative institutional experience. The most significant benefit of accreditation has been the strengthening of AURAK's institutional quality culture and enhancement-orientated mindset across the University. The review contributed to the development of more robust quality assurance processes, reinforced assessment and academic integrity frameworks, improved programme enhancement practices, and shaped institutional planning and decision-making.

Have you observed any changes in student recruitment or international partnerships since accreditation?

International accreditation contributed positively to institutional confidence, faculty engagement, and external visibility. The University has expanded collaborations with internationally recognised universities, creating new opportunities for student exchange, accelerated progression pathways, dual-degree opportunities, collaborative research, and globally connected learning experiences. At the same time, stronger engagement with industry has increased opportunities for internships, applied learning, guest lectures, and professional certification. The review additionally supported the University’s broader internationalisation efforts and strengthened institutional credibility during discussions with prospective partners and stakeholders.

Has accreditation affected your institution’s reputation locally or globally?

International accreditation has contributed positively to AURAK's institutional credibility by providing independent international recognition of the University's commitment to academic quality and continuous enhancement. More importantly, it has elevated confidence among students, parents, employers, academic partners, and regulatory stakeholders that AURAK's commitment to quality is embedded within its institutional culture rather than driven solely by external accreditation requirements.

Recent collaborations with internationally recognised universities have broadened opportunities for student mobility, international progression and collaborative academic initiatives.

As AURAK continues its ongoing institutional transformation, international quality assurance has become an important enabler in supporting institutional maturity, educational excellence and enhancement. Ultimately, the review helped embed a sustainable culture of continuous improvement that extends beyond accreditation itself and continues to underpin the University’s long-term vision of becoming a globally recognised institution delivering high-quality, future-focused education.
