QAA accreditation case study: Institutional accreditation in United Arab Emirates

QAA’s international institutional accreditation helped Al Ain University to foster a culture of continuous improvement, strengthen their academic and administrative operations, and benchmark their processes against internationally recognised standards.

Professor Nazih Khaddaj Mallat, Vice President (Accreditation and Quality Assurance) at Al Ain University, shares how the accreditation process served as a catalyst for institutional transformation.

Why did you choose to seek international accreditation?

The University decided to pursue international accreditation to ensure that our programmes meet globally recognised quality standards and to continuously enhance the educational experience we provide. Accreditation offers an objective evaluation of our academic practices, helping us align our curriculum, teaching, assessment, and student support services with international best practices.

It also strengthens the credibility and recognition of our programmes, giving students, employers, and other stakeholders confidence in the quality of our education. Most importantly, the accreditation process fosters a culture of continuous improvement and identifies enhancement opportunities, ensuring that our graduates are well-prepared to succeed in an increasingly competitive and globalised environment.

Why did you choose to work with QAA and undertake institutional accreditation?

The selection of QAA’s international accreditation was based on QAA’s strong international reputation in higher education quality assurance and enhancement, as well as its extensive experience in supporting higher education institutions worldwide. Its recognised expertise, independent review methodology, and global credibility made it a suitable partner for external quality review. QAA’s established standing within the higher education sector and the positive experiences reported by other institutions further informed the decision.

How has accreditation influenced internal quality assurance, academic programmes or administrative processes?

The international accreditation process served as a catalyst for several institutional improvements, particularly in strengthening governance, accountability, and operational efficiency. A more decentralised approach was adopted, with clearly defined roles and responsibilities across departments, enabling greater ownership and accountability at all levels.

In preparation for accreditation, AAU established regular monitoring and review mechanisms to track performance, identify gaps, and implement corrective actions promptly. Scheduled meetings and enhanced communication channels improved coordination among departments and supported a more agile and efficient workflow. Additionally, policies, procedures, and documentation practices were reviewed and refined to align with international quality standards, improving transparency and evidence-based decision making.

Accreditation has strengthened our institution’s quality assurance practices by facilitating a culture of continuous improvement and accountability. It encouraged departments to regularly review their performance, monitor outcomes, and use data to identify areas for enhancement. This has helped create a more proactive approach to maintaining quality and achieving institutional goals.

The accreditation process has also improved both academic and administrative operations. Academic programmes are now reviewed more systematically to ensure they remain relevant and aligned with learning objectives. Our existing curriculum review processes were strengthened by introducing a more structured and evidence-based approach, and the process reinforced the regular use of stakeholder feedback and quality assurance data to ensure that curricula remain relevant, aligned with international good practices, and responsive to evolving academic and industry needs. Administrative processes have become more organised through clearer procedures and better coordination among departments. Regular review meetings and progress monitoring, introduced during the accreditation journey, have improved communication, supported timely decision-making, and contributed to more efficient and effective institutional operations.

The guidance and support provided by QAA helped the institution better understand the accreditation requirements and successfully meet the expected standards. QAA accreditation strengthened evidence-based decision making across the University, refined our assessment and programme review practices, and increased stakeholder confidence in the quality and credibility of our academic programmes.
