Complete collection of resources enabling students from underrepresented backgrounds to develop confidence and competencies now available

Date: June 22 - 2023

A complete collection of resources on enabling students from underrepresented backgrounds to develop confidence and competencies is now available through a QAA-funded Collaborative Enhancement Project (CEP).

The project was completed with the publication of its final report, which outlines the findings and outcomes of the Inclusive Futures Project. The project was a direct response to the challenges posed by the COVID pandemic and aimed to enhance the benefits of the annual Inclusive Futures Virtual Careers Fair for underrepresented students.

Key outputs from this project include a Virtual Careers Fair and Toolkit, designed to help students build confidence when communicating with employers in virtual settings; a Reciprocal Flash Mentoring Programme to support the understanding of lived experiences between students and employers; and the creation of three good practice guides for employers, students and providers based on the lessons learned from the project.

The project has delivered several positive outcomes including:

  • greater levels of participation between employers and students at the Virtual Careers Fair, which improved access to career opportunities and highlighted the value of collaboration between partners in enhancing student outcomes
  • improved levels of student preparation for the Virtual Careers Fair compared to previous events
  • the Reciprocal Flash Mentoring programme eased meaningful mentorship and support for students, while providing employers with valuable insights and prompting positive changes in their interactions and processes.

These resources were produced by our Developing a toolkit to enable students from underrepresented backgrounds to develop confidence and competencies CEP, led by London Metropolitan University in partnership with the University of West London, University of Westminster, University of Hertfordshire, Kingston University, University of Roehampton and the University of Greenwich.
