Professor Sarah Eaton

PROFESSOR SARAH EATON
Professor, Werklund School of Education University of Calgary, Canada
Honorary Associate Professor, Deakin University, Australia

Professor Sarah Elaine Eaton is an internationally recognised authority on academic integrity and the ethics of AI in education. She leads transdisciplinary research teams examining the ethical implications of advanced technologies in education, and is the originator of the postplagiarism framework, which has been translated into half a dozen languages and has received worldwide attention. The framework sets out how integrity and assessment practice must adapt to an era in which AI is embedded in teaching and learning.

She has been Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal for Educational Integrity since 2021, and has edited or authored several major works, including the Second Handbook of Academic Integrity (2024), Contract Cheating in Higher Education: Global Perspectives on Theory, Practice, and Policy (2022) and Fake Degrees and Fraudulent Credentials in Higher Education (2023). She has worked with organisations and educational leaders in more than a dozen countries, including the UK, Ireland, Australia, the US and South Africa. She delivered the Werklund School’s Distinguished Research Lecture, considered a once-in-a-career honour, on AI, assessment and integrity.

Her expertise brings an international, evidence-informed perspective on assessment validity, academic standards and policy responses to generative AI to the Group’s work.

I am delighted to take part in this important initiative led by the QAA. A focus on inclusive education benefits all students. It’s time to update our assessment and academic integrity standards in ways that not only recognize, but value different ways of knowing, being, and learning.
