Monash University

Professor Phill Dawson is one of the world’s most influential researchers on assessment in higher education. He is in the top 1% of education researchers globally. He has recently taken up a research professorship at Monash University. Before that, he was Co-Director of the Centre for Research in Assessment and Digital Learning (CRADLE) at Deakin University, the world’s leading higher education assessment research group by publications and citations.

His research addresses the threats to assessment validity in a digital world. It spans AI-enabled cognitive offloading, the security of online examinations and inclusive assessment design, with a particular focus on academic integrity and assessment security. He is the author of Defending Assessment Security in a Digital World (Routledge, 2021) and co-editor of Re-imagining University Assessment in a Digital World (Springer, 2020). He has spoken internationally, including at King’s College London, the University of California and the University of Queensland. He holds a citation from the Australian Learning and Teaching Council and multiple university teaching awards and is a regular expert commentator for Australia’s national press and broadcasters.

Generative AI hasn’t created the validity problem in assessment. It has exposed how much we were relying on assumptions that no longer hold. What excites me about this project is that it starts from the right question. The question is not how we stop students using AI, but how institutions can be confident that the grades and awards they confer reflect what students can actually do. Getting that right matters for students, for employers and for public trust in degrees, and the UK’s work here will be watched closely internationally.
