New guide casts light on rapid growth of Indian TNE

Date: March 3 - 2026

The Quality Assurance Agency has published a new Country & Territory Guide to India, exclusive for participants in our scheme for the Quality Evaluation & Enhancement of UK Transnational Education (QE-TNE).

Originally commissioned by Universities UK and GuildHE and launched in 2021, the scheme serves more than 70 participating institutions.

Our scheme's refreshed iteration, the UK TNE Quality Scheme, was introduced at a special event on Thursday 26 February. The new iteration of the Scheme is commissioned by Universities UK, GuildHE and Independent HE, and supported by University Alliance and MillionPlus. The Department for Education England officially support the scheme, and the Department for the Economy Northern Ireland and Medr are also endorsing the scheme.

Our new Country Guide charts the high education landscape of the world's most populous nation – a nation in which more than 40 million students are enrolled at nearly 60,000 institutions, mapping the geographical spread and trending disciplines of Indian HE.

India has over 1,200 universities, and more than 52,000 government degree colleges, private colleges, standalone institutes and postgraduate research institutions. Its National Policy on Education aims to increase access to higher education through the creation of new providers, the promotion of online provision, the internationalisation of the sector and the liberalisation of the regulatory environment.

Our guide explores admissions and fees, employability, regulation and accreditation, and India's National Qualifications Framework.

Numerous press headlines have in recent months highlighted the significant growth of Indian TNE, with UK providers increasingly involved in that provision. Our new guide takes a deep dive into the data surrounding UK transnational education in the region, considers the impacts of the University Grants Commission's reform of the regulation of TNE, and offers key advice for UK providers on delivering TNE in India.

The report is available to QE-TNE Scheme participants on our website.
