About this project
The project Classroom to practice: enhancing quantitative methods teaching through real-life data is centred around three key areas: student learning, teaching and student employability.
The project has two overarching aims. First, it seeks to enhance undergraduate Social Sciences students’ engagement with, and understanding of, quantitative methods. The project will provide students with an opportunity to work with up-to-date secondary data to investigate a key social policy issue, developing practical research and employability skills. This interactive learning environment aims to bridge the gap between theory and practice to increase students’ confidence in applying research skills beyond the classroom.
The second aim of the project is to develop a new, policy-relevant teaching dataset and associated interactive learning resources which enhance student learning. This project will provide open access learning resources for instructors to integrate into their own teaching of quantitative methods, supporting the wider use of applying real-world data in the classroom.
The project Classroom to practice: enhancing quantitative methods teaching through real-life data has three key objectives:
- To develop an open access, policy-relevant teaching dataset to support quantitative methods teaching in Social Sciences.
- To utilise the new teaching dataset in core undergraduate quantitative methods modules and evaluate its impact on student engagement, confidence, and learning to inform future pedagogical practices.
- To promote knowledge exchange of quantitative methods teaching in Social Sciences through collaborative sessions.
This project begins with a systematic literature review examining existing evidence on student attitudes towards quantitative methods and key teaching challenges within undergraduate Social Sciences programmes in the UK. Building on this, the research will explore on the views of students and other key stakeholders to identify current needs and challenges, informing the development, implementation and evaluation of the policy-relevant teaching dataset.
