Neuroscientist
Swansea University Medical School

Professor Phil Newton is a neuroscientist from the Swansea University Medical School.

Phil's research focuses on the evidence base for effective practice in learning, teaching and assessment in higher education, with a particular emphasis on academic integrity and assessment validity, and he has spoken on these themes internationally for many years. Phil has worked extensively with the QAA and other international quality assurance agencies, is a member of the Council of Europe sub-group on Higher Education Policy, and has been a member of the Council of Europe platform on Ethics, Transparency and Integrity in Education (ETINED).  Phil also recently authored a report, published by Policy Exchange, which detailed the challenges of assessment validity in the age of AI.

 Phil's YouTube channel is  ‘newtonsneurosci’.

I'm delighted to be part of the QAA's Sector Advisory Group for this important project. Assessment validity and the assurance of academic standards are fundamental to maintaining confidence in UK higher education, and this is a timely opportunity to bring rigorous, evidence-based thinking to how the sector responds to the challenges — and opportunities — that generative AI presents for assessment design.
