Assuring Academic Standards in the Age of AI

Generative AI is changing how students learn and how that learning can be demonstrated. For providers, the key question is not only whether AI is used, but whether assessment still provides valid evidence that students have met the academic standards of their award.

This QAA project works with the sector to answer that question. Guided by a Sector Advisory Group of expert academic and student representatives from across the UK, it is developing:

  • sector-owned principles for assuring academic standards in an AI-enabled environment, developed by the sector, for the sector, in partnership with students
  • shared definitions of key assessment terms, including assessment validity
  • recommendations for further action and implementation approaches

The project draws on extensive sector research and work with partners across the UK’s four nations and internationally, so its outputs complement existing regulatory and sector guidance.

Draft sector principles

The following principles have been revised and updated to form a second draft in response to initial feedback from the Sector Advisory Group. The original draft was, in part, based on the findings of the QAA’s State of the Nation: The Perfect Storm: AI, assessment and a sector under pressure (July 2026), and broader sector research.

We are welcoming feedback from providers, students and other stakeholders before the principles and definitions are finalised later this year.

Access resources on Generative AI

To help the sector, QAA has curated a range of resources relating to Generative AI and the ways it can be used as a positive tool while also maintaining academic standards. We have funded this curation work through QAA Membership fees. It is made publicly available for the benefit of the sector.

The resources are arranged in themes – each of which has its own dedicated page. You can gain quick access to QAA advice and resources or browse the different themes. Many of the resources are links to external websites and, while active at the time of creating this site, QAA cannot guarantee their ongoing availability or content.
