The National Review of Awarding Arrangements Guide for Institutions sets out how those universities selected will be reviewed.

It details the key roles and stages in the review process, its evidential requirements, reporting and outcome protocols, its follow-up activities and the responsibilities of review teams.

Scottish Funding Council published the scope of a review [PDF] which will consider the arrangements for the awarding of qualifications across Scottish universities as well as producing some frequently asked questions.

Sample of institutions

The sampling methodology (outlined in Phases 1 and 2 of the  national review of awarding arrangements guide), in combination with those institutions who volunteered to participate, has resulted in the identification of nine universities from within Scotland’s Higher Education Institutions for inclusion within Phase 3 of the National Review of Awarding Arrangements. It is important to note that selection does not imply that a concern has been identified; rather, it ensures a balanced and representative sample.

Phase 3 of the National Review will be a deep dive review and will not result in formal judgements about the academic standards of institutions' awards but will result, if appropriate, in the identification of recommendations for action to address any areas for development or weaknesses and areas of good practice. Individual reports will not be published by QAA, but an overarching thematic report will be published following the conclusion of the review process.

The nine universities selected for deep-dive review are as follows:

  • Abertay University
  • Glasgow Caledonian University
  • Heriot-Watt University
  • Robert Gordon University
  • University of Dundee
  • University of Edinburgh
  • University of St Andrews
  • University of Stirling
  • University of the West of Scotland
