ELIR reports on the University of Strathclyde

Date: July 5 - 2019

The UK's independent quality body has published Enhancement-led Institutional Review (ELIR) reports on the University of Strathclyde.

The University is commended for working in partnership with its students, establishing strong connections with local industry, and providing opportunities for an international university experience.

QAA appointed a team of six independent experts to review the University earlier this academic year. The team awarded the University commendations in seven areas, including its:

  • well-established links with industry and the positive impact these have on learning and teaching
  • collaborative approach to digital education, transforming the way expertise in developing online courses and resources are shared across the University
  • international outlook: students enjoy an international element as part of their university experience, with opportunities to study or work abroad.

The report also commends the University for its smart use of data to inform decision-making, and its approach to student partnership, including opportunities for student interns.

QAA makes four recommendations for the University including ensuring all postgraduate research students receive formal training before commencing teaching or assessing others; and sharing information with students about the work of external examiners.

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, said: 'I am delighted by the outcome of our review.

'As a leading international technological university, I am particularly pleased the reviewers commended us for our clear strategic vision, our links with industry, our approach to digital education and our international outlook.

'We are committed to ensuring that all of our students benefit from excellent education and a first-class experience.  We continue to enhance our provision in these areas, including through a £1 billion investment in our campus which includes a new Sports and Health centre and a Learning & Teaching building due to open in 2020.

'I am grateful to the staff and students of Strathclyde who have helped us to achieve this fantastic outcome.'

The ELIR confirms that the University of Strathclyde has effective arrangements for managing academic standards and the student learning experience. This judgement confirms there can be public confidence in the University's awards and in the quality of the learning experience it provides for its students.
