Updated Subject Benchmark Statements for Professional Services programmes

Date: November 28 - 2019

As part of our ongoing work to refresh and revise our suite of Subject Benchmark Statements, we have published updates to statements in Professional Services subjects, such as Law, and Business and Management.

Subject Benchmark Statements describe the nature of study and the academic standards expected of graduates in specific subject areas. They show what graduates might reasonably be expected to know, do and understand at the end of their studies. Professional services programmes tend to be vocational and closely aligned to a student's chosen career path. The Subject Benchmarks Statements may also set out, or align with, the requirements of professional, statutory or regulatory bodies that oversee the professions.

As with our recent updates in STEM subjects, the refreshed versions do not represent a major change to the content of each Statement but are minor revisions to make sure they are up to date with current reference points, including the 2018 UK Quality Code for Higher Education.

The Statements published today are:

  • Accounting
  • Architectural Technology
  • Business and Management
  • Dietetics (BSc & PgDip/MSc; pre-registration)
  • Early Childhood Studies
  • Events, Leisure, Sport and Tourism
  • Health Studies
  • Housing Studies
  • Landscape Architecture
  • Law
  • Optometry
  • Osteopathy
  • Paramedics
  • Psychology
  • Social Work
  • Youth and Community Work

Before Christmas, we will publish further minor revisions to Subject Benchmark Statements in Humanities subjects. We will also soon be consulting on a major revision to the Subject Benchmark Statement for Architecture.

Funding for the work to amend these Subject Benchmark Statements predates QAA Membership. We are therefore publishing these Statements on our website for all to access. For future revisions of Subject Benchmark Statements, QAA will be reviewing its approach and process for updating and publishing Subject Benchmark Statements in early 2020 to reflect the fact that this important work is funded directly by QAA Member institutions. More information about QAA Membership, including how to join, can be found on the QAA website.
