safeguarding standards and improving the quality of UK higher education

Amendments to HE Bill

Date 24/02/2017

Welcoming Jo Johnson MP’s speech on amendments to the higher education bill, QAA Chief Executive Douglas Blackstock said:

'These announcements strengthen the Higher Education and Research Bill, with important safeguards on institutional autonomy, independence and the academic standards of English higher education.

‘The amendments reinforce the Government's commitment to a modernised and balanced system of co-regulation of our world leading higher education system. They clarify that responsibilities for academic standards remain in shared sector ownership as expressed in the UK Quality Code.

'The requirement for independent checks and balances in the granting of Degree Awarding Powers reinforces the Government’s commitment that only high quality providers should enter the sector.'
