Data Matters: Using data to improve the student experience

Date: 16 January 2019
Location: London

2019’s Data Matters conference will welcome data practitioners, quality professionals and digital service specialists to discuss topical issues around data and its use in higher education.

Delegates will learn from peers via workshops and practical sessions, with experts and thought leaders providing valuable insights. Confirmed sessions include:

  • The value of data capability improvements
  • Weaving narrative and numbers to create a pattern of student success
  • Bringing data to students: development of a digital graduate career planning tool for adult learners
  • Using data to support the student digital experience (digital experience insights) - data and learning from JISC’s digital student tracker
  • Data informed enhancement of student wellbeing
  • Intelligent Campus
  • Latest research: implications and applications (Social media pilot update)

Workshops will be categorised into three themes:

  • What data is out there and what (or not) to do with it

This stream aims to showcase the ‘how to’ of data collation, reporting and visualisation.  Sessions will include topics such as how to make effective use of your data, how dashboards can be utilised to provide assurance to senior management, and will include provider case studies.

  • Concepts of Data

Concepts of Data sessions will explore how to use data to improve understanding of the student journey.  Sessions will cover the development of career planning tools, using data to support the student digital experience, and how you can get to know your student body through data.

  • Data Horizons

The ‘Data Horizons’ stream provides conference-goers with a snapshot of recent advances in data and its potential use to support students and quality assurance processes.  Sessions will showcase examples of data informed enhancement of student wellbeing and updates on the latest research on monitoring the student experience via social media.

Over 240 delegates attended the first Data Matters conference, positively responding to the event:

‘It was really good to be reminded how much data matters, and that it really does matter - talking to others working in this area and hearing their experience’.

‘I liked the range of attendees and the speakers were all very good. There was a lot of choice within the overall concept of "data", reflecting the centrality of this concept at the moment’.

The conference will provide opportunities to network, learn, collaborate and gain the insight and expertise that will help break down barriers within your institution.

Make digital work for you and your students. Make the best of your data and convey the story it tells. And ultimately turn data into insight. If you are a higher education professional who works with, or are interested in the usage of data, this is a day not to be missed.

The conference is jointly run by the M5 Group - QAA, Jisc and HESA, who are UK higher education’s data, quality and digital experts. We have one overarching aim: improving the student experience in a data-driven world.
