safeguarding standards and improving the quality of UK higher education

Introducing the Quality Code

The UK Quality Code was developed with the higher education sector, and is maintained and published on their behalf, by QAA. It sets out the Expectations that all providers of UK higher education are required to meet.

For a list of all the Expectations which make up the Quality Code, please see the Summary list of the 19 Expectations, or compile your own list using our Build Your Own Quality Code tool.

What the Quality Code covers

The Quality Code is grouped into three Parts:

Part A on academic standards
Part B on academic quality
Part C on information about higher education provision

Each of these is subdivided into Chapters covering specific themes. Part A also includes the Qualifications Frameworks, the Subject Benchmark Statements and the Higher Education Credit Framework.

How the Quality Code is used

The Quality Code gives all higher education providers a shared starting point for setting, describing and assuring the academic standards of their higher education awards and programmes and the quality of the learning opportunities they provide.

Providers apply it in designing and delivering programmes of study, and use it to design their respective policies for maintaining academic standards and quality.

Our reviewers use it as the main reference point for their review work.

How the Quality Code is developed and revised

For more information on how the Quality Code is developed, please see the Protocol for developing the Quality Code. For more information about how we manage revisions to the Quality Code, please see the Protocol for revisions to the Quality Code.
