safeguarding standards and improving the quality of UK higher education

Assuring standards and quality

""

We develop and maintain key documents that are used by higher education providers to help them meet UK expectations about standards and quality. This work is done through close collaboration with the higher education sector.

Central to our work of assuring standards and quality is the UK Quality Code for Higher Education (the Quality Code), which sets out the expectations all providers of UK higher education are required to meet. It gives all higher education providers a shared starting point for setting, describing and assuring the academic standards of their higher education awards and programmes and the quality of the learning opportunities they provide. The Quality Code is the core reference point used in all our review activity. It was introduced in the 2012-13 academic year, replacing its predecessor the Academic Infrastructure.

We also produce a range of other guidance to help education providers ensure that students receive a high quality experience of UK higher education. In this area of our website you will find publications and guidance that explain such topics as the award of academic credit, the equivalence of qualifications throughout the countries of the UK, and how contact hours and assessment contribute to the quality of your education. If you are coming from overseas to study in the UK you might find it useful to read our international pages or our guidance on how UK qualifications relate to those in other European countries.

If you need further support with quality enhancement within your institution, QAA Enterprises can offer training and consultancy.
