safeguarding standards and improving the quality of UK higher education

Working with professional bodies

QAA Scotland has a programme of work with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) (opens in new window), the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) (opens in new window), and NHS Education for Scotland (NES) (opens in new window) on practice-based learning (PBL). PBL is learning that is explicitly designed to relate to professional practice standards. It includes learning that is work-based, undertaken in placements and aims to enhance learners' employability.

Our work aims to encourage the sharing of PBL practice between the social care, teaching and nursing professions.

Work to date has focused on:
  • learning support (including practice-based teaching qualifications and mentorship)
  • supporting newly qualified practitioners
  • practice placement coordination
  • harmonising documentation.
