Working with professional bodies

What is PBL?
Practice-based learning (PBL) is learning that is explicitly designed to relate to professional practice standards. It includes learning that is work-based, undertaken in placements and aims to enhance learners' employability.

QAA Scotland has a programme of work with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) and NHS Education for Scotland  (NES) on practice-based learning (PBL).

Our work aims to encourage the sharing of PBL practice between the social care, teaching and nursing professions.

Work to date has focused on:

  • learning support (including practice-based teaching qualifications and mentorship)
  • supporting newly qualified practitioners
  • practice placement coordination
  • harmonising documentation.

We have published a report on the key aspects of practice-based learning in teaching, nursing and social work in Scotland:
